Thomas Ugelvik

imagem Thomas Ugelvik is a post-doctoral research fellow at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law at the University of Oslo, Norway. He is currently working on an ethnography of state power with a particular focus on foreign prisoners and the relationship between the prison and the immigration detention system. The study will explore ways that prisons and prison like institutions are being put to new uses as parts of a new pan-European mobility control regime.

In the past, he has published articles on different aspects of everyday life in prison, such as food-related resistance in prison, imprisonment as masculinity challenge and the "othering" of fellow prisoners as ethical self-work. He is co-editor of /Penal exceptionalism? Nordic prison policy and practice/ (2011, Routledge) and series co-editor of the Palgrave Studies in Prisons and Penology book series (with Yvonne Jewkes and Ben Crewe).
